Thereâs a kind of grief that doesnât have a funeral. A heartbreak that doesnât come from a single moment, but from an ongoing absence â one that chips away at peopleâs dignity, sanity, and hope.
That grief, for many, is the loss of faith in our mental health system.
As a therapist in the UK, Iâve sat across from countless people whoâve reached out for help â bravely, vulnerably â only to be met with silence, waiting lists, or a leaflet. Some are told theyâre not âunwell enoughâ to qualify. Others are told theyâre too complex. Some just give up.
And what theyâre left with is more than loneliness. Itâs a deep internalisation that their pain doesnât matter. That they donât matter.
I feel angry â not at the people delivering care, who are often burnt out themselves, but at the structures and decisions that have deprioritised mental health over and over again.
People are breaking down. And itâs not a metaphor.
The truth is: we are failing people. And not just as a healthcare system, but as a society that still treats emotional pain as a personal weakness rather than a legitimate health crisis.
No wonder the stigma persists. No wonder people feel ashamed to speak up. How can we encourage openness if what follows is⊠nothing?
Iâm aware that this post might feel heavy â and thatâs because it is heavy. But I donât want to leave you in that place. If youâve felt that same grief, that same silence, I want you to know this:
You are not the problem.
You are not too much.
You are not invisible.
You deserve care â and until that care is widely available, I hope this space can offer something in its place.
Over the coming weeks, Iâll be sharing more resources and reflections â ways to navigate anxiety, depression, identity struggles, and emotional overwhelm, especially when professional support isnât accessible. These wonât replace therapy, but they may offer a small dose of something steady and human.
