    🩺 The Quiet Grief of a Fading NHS: What Happens When Help Isn’t There?

    There’s a kind of grief that doesn’t have a funeral. A heartbreak that doesn’t come from a single moment, but from an ongoing absence — one that chips away at people’s dignity, sanity, and hope.

    That grief, for many, is the loss of faith in our mental health system.

    As a therapist in the UK, I’ve sat across from countless people who’ve reached out for help — bravely, vulnerably — only to be met with silence, waiting lists, or a leaflet. Some are told they’re not “unwell enough” to qualify. Others are told they’re too complex. Some just give up.

    And what they’re left with is more than loneliness. It’s a deep internalisation that their pain doesn’t matter. That they don’t matter.

    I feel angry — not at the people delivering care, who are often burnt out themselves, but at the structures and decisions that have deprioritised mental health over and over again.
    People are breaking down. And it’s not a metaphor.

    The truth is: we are failing people. And not just as a healthcare system, but as a society that still treats emotional pain as a personal weakness rather than a legitimate health crisis.

    No wonder the stigma persists. No wonder people feel ashamed to speak up. How can we encourage openness if what follows is… nothing?

    I’m aware that this post might feel heavy — and that’s because it is heavy. But I don’t want to leave you in that place. If you’ve felt that same grief, that same silence, I want you to know this:

    You are not the problem.
    You are not too much.
    You are not invisible.
    You deserve care — and until that care is widely available, I hope this space can offer something in its place.
